Sandra Bullock, Forrest Whitaker, Wesley Snipes, 50 Cent, Steven Segal, Jean-Claude van Damme, Kurt Russell are not in the film as previously reported.Producer Avi Lerner has reported that the film will be cut down to two versions, a PG-13 edit and a R-rated version, both of which will be screen tested to see which one will be officially released. Lerner is considering cutting down the violence because of the success of recent PG-13 action films such as Live Free or Die Hard. Lerner has claimed that 2008's Rambo could have been even more successful, had it not contained such extreme violence and gore. In the interview, Lerner also confirmed that Rambo 5 is in the works and won't be as violent as Rambo 4 but will be as least as violent as Rambo III

The Expendables has a seventy million-dollar budget," says Stallone's co-star Dolph Lundgren, "and it's an old-school, kick-[censored] action movie where people are fighting with knives and shooting at each other." The film pays tribute to the blockbuster action films during the 1980s and early 90s, as the film includes action veterans from those decades (such as Stallone himself, Bruce Willis, Dolph Lundgren, Arnold Schwarzenegger, etc.).
