Ever have one of those dreams that just doesn't fade away when you pinch yourself?

Yeah I and a few people are keeping our eyes on this. No money behind this so chances of it actually working out well are probably slim but there's still hope :)

It'll take SOE and LA all of .0005 seconds to stick a gaggle of lawyers on it that will have it closed so fast you can't even click connect. Shame.

Naw apparently there's some legal loophole or something. They wouldn't have done all this work without first seeing if anyone could play it.

you mean like all the lineageII sites that have been getting hit lately? They do it because they can and because some lawyer that doesn't know anything about software said they might be able to pull it off. Then the software lawyers get involved and it vanishes from sight..never to return again.

Emulators are nothing new, EQ1 has a great one (http://eqemulator.net ... PEQ ftw) and EQ2 had some development being done but has since disappeared. WOW had a popular one but blizzard put the smackdown on it hard.

These have been pretty much ignored by SOE since they have never been close to the quality of the original product, and most games require you to have a paid subscription to patch (this is why ... remember when you could patch EQ1 without logging in??). While some sites do provide patched files, this is considered warez and the smart sites (ie see above) do not tolerate this at ALL and will ban anyone providing files. This is how they stay on the "good" side of the original company.

Honestly, I think the EMUs are good for the game. It keeps people interested in games that die, and keeps subscription counts up for anyone who wishes to play them legally. It offers players a peek behind the curtain on how they work and if nothing else, its fun to mess around on :)

I doubt any emu on SWG would need any updates from the current coding. It's 2 different games now. No emu would need anything beyond the last patch before the cu and there is no way to get that by patching into the current SOE system. The old disks won't work either. THey will have to supply their own for anyone to download if they want to make it work right.

Now if they wanted to make it an emu of the currrent game..then yes, you would be correct.

Emulated servers can be fun. Nevermind the fact that you're not paying for it, things like 10x xp and money can alleviate the repetitiveness that devs put in place to keep ppl playing and paying, and make the game as fun as it should have been in the first place.

I was reading up on their forums, and while you do need the client (the disks or whatever) you will be able to DL the version and thus the game from them. They are saying the game will be released for everyone to run on their own servers or (LAN for those that want to play at home alone) with the game at patch 12.1 and will have JTL on it as well. The launch will not have jedi in it.

IF someone had a server with the space, this would be cool to have as a side thing for us to mess around in on free time. We would have full control over the game and have a blast...there is currently no planned radiant server either so if we started up one as a radiant server, we would likely get a lot of other players as well that we know...and we would be the ones runnig it and able to do GM stuff and run our own story lines and battles etc. Heck, make everyone go rebel and leave us as the GM tropper calling AT-ST handlging imperials!

haha ... so the forum lives.

I have been watching this for a while as well. A hit on the slashdot front page should bring a little attention to the project. It would be beyond amazing to get the old SWG crew together and stomp some rebels.

From what I was reading, some of those servers have 1000+ registered users so far as well. Heck, I would love to have a copy to run on my LAN to just screw around in PVE as well as doing some small style PVP on. The real question is time fram. Its been 6 months since I quit SWG. If they dont' have this runnign for another 6months or more, I imagine I as well as many others will have finally worked the last of the SWG addiction out of our systems and be established in other MMOs for good.

OK, you made me cry a little just thinking of that...

They not only are putting auto targeting back in, but they are also putting back in auto aiming...as in what we used to have. THey are leaving the manual aiming as well and giving it a higher chance of criticals. It can finally be classified as an RPG once again and not as a FPS.

I nominate you, our old Grand Poobah. Let us know when it's up.
I almost cried when I watched that video.
There is an RP server named Antilla EMU. I'll give it a shot this weekend and report my findings.
