So I was playing STO the other night, and everything was running fine. Game ran smoothly on my Dell Precision M6400 Laptop. At one point I actually went into shutdown mode because I had been playing on battery power (the power cable on the Precision doesn't stay in too well). I plugged back in, came up fine, and soon after logged out for the night.

The next day I couldn't play STO for shit, incredible lag. Totally unplayable. I tried upgrading all my drivers, including video, chipset, and bios. Nothing. Uninstalled the game and reinstalled. The patch was chugging along (7GB) so while I waited I logged in to Fallen Earth. Low and Behold lag. But I was in a big city crafting, so nothing new. I moved my laptop to a table to get another beer and came back. Game was running great. 70+ fps. Low and behold, my power supply was unplugged...

Guess what, shit hits the fan when I'm plugged in. Running on battery, performance is awesome.

wtf...

Can't wait for STO to finish patching to verify this. But I can duplicate the lag in Fallen Earth by simply pluggin in...

Anybody seen this before?

Look at your power settings, maybe they are a bit backward lol

Overheating. Plain and simple. Power supply is adding heat to the unit.

Told ya... u were the only one complaining about that kind of lag problem...
...although i was betting more on yer neighbours were stealing your net signal

Anyways, sorry to hear that and i hope u manage to fix yer machine so it can compete with my 4 or 5 year old Pentium 4 at 3.2 Ghz (when Dual-Core tech was still far from being invented) :p

Bah, f you and your "I told you so"!

;)

I was able to play today with the power supply unplugged. I used SpeedFan to pinpoint the problem, the GPU is hitting 78 celcius. Way bad.

Got a few possible solutions to try, then it's a call to Dell...
