How similar do you think the games will be? Would playing SWG give me an idea of how TOR would play or would I just be better off replaying a KOTOR?

I think and hope you would be better off replaying a KOTOR and so far its sounding like that is truth. I absolutely LOATH what they did to SWG with the NGE, if this MMO turns out like that I wont make it past beta before I throw my hands up scream bloody murder at Bioware.

Bioware has made it very clear that SW:TOR will be a culmination of the previous KOTOR games as well as a brand new platform for the KOTOR series. As for being influenced by SWG it would be hard in some way not to take the positives of that game. Even the Bioware director, as stated in PC gamers December issue, has played and enjoyed aspects of SWG, mainly it's freedom and open ended worlds. In all honestly it does not sound like SW:TOR will turn into a "SWG" clone since Biowares record for gaming has shown they do things their own way.

I agree. I think it will be a well made game that is pretty much a MMOized KOTOR (who woulda thunk?). I think those that are hoping it is a SWG2 will be disappointed.

As long as it is it's own game and not a WoW clone i will be happy. Not in the mood for WoW in space...

Every time I think about playing a game made by sony I get an irresistible urge to lose my food. So no I have not and will not try playing it.

I'm not a huge fan of the "stylized Reality" graphics, which are a PR way of saying "WoW Graphix" but as long as the gameplay is what they have promised....Storyline Driven gameplay, I will be a huge fan. I am one of the heretical few on SWG who is proud to consider himself a RolePlayer, so I beleive this game will be far more attuned to that sect of players. There are some noticeable lacking features though. Player cities being the most notable. A lot of us like the idea of decorating our houses and so forth...something to do other than just play the game, it adds to the persistent universe theme....you can spend all day everyday decorateing your walls if you want, and the game goes on without you.
That being said. This rumored micro-transaction system that is rumored to be a part of this game, will kill this game to all but monty hall players with mom and dads credit card or the same people who pay credit farmers kids through college now. It will die on the vine imo. Otherwise, I look forward to submitting for Beta testing and murdering some Light side Jedi pansies :-)

I'm still very interested in seeing how they implement the mico-transaction system if they do. If they implement it just for cosmetics like a fancy look to your lightsaber I wont care. Even if they give you EXP potions that i dont mind. I really don't mind grinding and don't care much if someone wants to spend their money to grind less then me. I am sure they will still do their share as one of the biggest keepers in MMOs today seems to be making people endlessly grind money to get that next cool thing in game. Then again, if they offer all the cool things via RL money and then allow you to earn em with ingame cash as well it gives people a choice on which way they want to get it. That part could be cool. :)

The Micro Transaction rumor is being heavily discussed on the forums and a couple of Moderators and community managers have come out and hinted that the micro transactions will FOR SURE be gender changes, name changes, and appearance changes.
As for the things we are really worried about such as items, final sets of gear, and permanent items that are unattainable unless paid for, I doubt they would turn the game in that direction since it would turn away a lot of fans.
If the only way to obtain the best items in the game is to be paid for with real money and handed to you, you will lose any player that plays MMO's, RPG's more specifically, for the reason they are called as such. Leaving only a bunch of spoiled ten year old kids and another bunch that I wouldn't want to be playing with anyway.
Reward without effort appeals only to those who lack the understanding of the words' meaning.
With my negativity out of the way, I have high hopes for this title to be a success. I thoroughly enjoyed both KotoR games and BioWare titles in general. As long as they nail down the critical components of what makes slashing something with a lightsaber fun, my vote is on fully severing limbs, I could grind exp all day.
I was playing Antlantica Online a little bit ago, it was a free to play and had a cash shop for certain items. All the items you could buy were more of a matter of convenience, like teleportations licenses and increased inventory. those were more or less used as a monthly subscription and about the same price about 12$ for one month and discounts for multiple months.
You could buy some additional potions or scrolls that could be used in PVE since it had a big PvP aspect to it as well. Overall, I liked how the system was implemented. You couldn't buy gear with cash, and all the licenses and such were eventually supposed to be able to be player made I think, though at the time I stopped playing nobody was able to, and they would probably take rare ingredients.
Fundementally you could play without ever paying a dime, it would just mean you had to run everywhere or use in game cash to travel city to city.
I think the only thing that you had to buy from the store that wasn't available by any other means except maybe a GM reward, was the ability to change your sex and class.
You could purchase extra rare drop boxes that would yield potions and scrolls or maybe a mount. But these did drop in the game as well, though ultra rare. And even if you bought it from the cash store, it was random and you may or may not get a mount. I tihnk you could buy a lower end mount at the store straight out though, just not get the super special omgitsamylittleponywithbraids and sparkles mount.
Obviously with a monthly subscription, consumers expect the transportation and all the things that would go with a regular subscription.
Done well a cash store is just lame for hardcore players and fills the markets need to entice casual players that want the same feeling off accomplishment but with less effort. Judgement Scrolls were nice dont get me wrong I had a bunch from event, it was basically an OMG I won again button.
If you want to spend your real cash on a game for sometihng that will take me another 6 hours to go lvl up and hunt for gear so I can accomplish with some talent and skill then by all means fund the game, and keep my subscription price low.
The cash store helps to bridge the gap between casuals and non casuals that many games just dumb down the original content so they can apeal to market interests.
If done well it can be a good thing that is just a lame side effect of poor gaming, on the other hand you run the risk of making the game dependant on cash and not competition. To all things a balance, that is the way of the Jedi.

OK...here is my take.
When SWG came out with the NGE (new game enhancements) It was at the urging of Lukas Arts who wanted to drive subscription numbers higher.
The NGE SUXED soooo badly it was like eating day old pig vomit!
That said...SWG now is nothing like the NGE it released over 3 years ago.
So some of the jaded players will not know the advancements that have been made. SOE really did a good job resurrecting the game and making it one of the funnest MMO's out there atm..
There have been so many advancements and additions to SWG its imposable to even scratch the surface...so I wont bother.
SWG now is in my opinion one of the top (underdog) games out there.
If you like Star Wars....you will like SWG.
TOR will be a different game altogether, The graphics will not be as realistic (stylized like clone wars) but it does promise some serious gameplay.
For people that like to roleplay...this is their game. The storylines seem to promise a lot content and I will be interested in trying this out.
I am really waiting to see how they will implement PVP, This will be the breakpoint for me.
PVP in SWG atm is very fun and not limited to instances. You can PVP on any planet or any space zone. If PVP in the new Star Wars game is very limited....I actually see more people that are into PVP going back to... or trying out SWG. (the new MMO may drive numbers to SWG)
SWG does have a lot going for it that any other MMO does not have.
I do think that both can co-exist in the MMO world based on what I have read on the new Star Wars MMO.
If you want to try out SWG, get with me....I am the team leader and would love to show existing DROW/BotS members around.
If you want to be part of an Elite PVP team and get into the Star Wars mentality before SWTOR comes out...DROW is rated one of the top guilds on any server in SWG!!!
