I just wanted to give some more details on my previous thread on this forum. Anyway the swg 1.5 seems to be in doc production right now, and this is what one of my friends has given me. My advice keep an eye on your emails folks this stuff is going to be comeing out very soon.
Here is what the rough outlines supposedly are. The new game engine will be built in house, and will not be bought or subcontracted from another company. This is the prime directive as it were the developement team for this project will be a carry over team in other words they will not only build the engine but be the ones responsible for upgradeing and maintaining. In other words their engine they know what they are doing. Apparantly this is based off something WoW did correctly. Here are a few of what is in the the first docs for the products features they want in and by god if I was mad about what SOE did to galaxies 1 if even half this **edit** makes it to SWG 2 I am going to forgive all.
A. Species diversification and migration. Outline species will have inate special abilities not the old modifiers. Players will no longer be socketed in to one species a major issue with galaxies. Players will be allowed to migrate out of species and even be able to hybridize their character.
B. Dynamic enviroment. Outlined plan enviromental conditiions in the game enviroment will effectively generate obstacles for players. Enviroment will disable some character features while generate validity to others. In other words you will not swim 500 meters and in a sand storm on tattooine your radar will go on the fritz makeing navigation hazardous.
C. Story line ala your own saga. Takeing a cue from Kotor which is widely held as a gold standard for story. The new game will involve a more free flowing model. Imageing one of those old books where you make the choice and flip to page 85. Each player will get a randomly generated back story which has multiple paths to follow. This is also the means to generate a jedi. All players will have jedi potential but the means to create a jedi will be very much a result of makeing the right choices in your story line, but players will get multiple chances see D.
D. Once again takeing a page from Kotor the new SWG actually has a very strong replay feature multiple characters. Each player will start off with 1 character but based on their story driven interactions they will have the opportunity to obtain npcs that actually become another playable character for the player. A character they will be able to build. Details are sketchy but look to see around 6 total. Players can keep characters they obtain or kick them from the party. The main point though is that you can only play one character at a time. To switch up you will need to go to home base.
E. I really love this one why because its star warsy to the core. Players will no longer own player structures. They will instead be based on a ship that will work as not only a house but as transportation. The goal is for players to use npc cities for other functions like healing selling tradeing and so forth. To access your ship you will simply go to a starport and access your ship which sadly will not be visible to other players.
F. Profession developement and alpha game. Nine iconic no more with multiple character availablity the system will be retooled to be even more expansive then the original outline of SWG in order to keep things fresh. Players will not only have the old masteries but a whole new slew degrees afterwards. Things like legenday will not be inpossible. Further end game content. While mastery may not take exceedingly long opening up elite non skill point boxes will take a long time.
G. Utility skills finally the players will get what they have dreamed of forever utility skills will arrive. Things like cracking security useing remote probes stealth smuggleing to persuasive speaking. Yes this is something they want in the game to prevent players from simple button mashing. Finding a area difficult try sneaking past the guards or over loading a console.
H. The galactic civil war just got less civil. The following are what they are looking to implement instanced battlefields. Sort of like instanced dungeons where teams enter and get paired up against an opposeing team. While the plans arent to remove free pvp such as we had early in the game with raids sweeps and ambushes. Those who have a high desire for instant combat will be allowed to go head to head in battle arenas.
I. Unlockables a new concept that actually has me tweeked. Enviroments and even planets will be unlockable. As a pseudo replacement for loot glutony. Allowing players to unlock new contents. Dungeons, arenas, features like soundtracks, and the like. A player will either do quests or purchase unlockables.
J. Real time cinematics. Tired of the same drivel to be found in any npc city imageing turning a corner and seeing two npcs haveing at one another asking another player to make a choice. With a voice over too boot? Sounds farfetched huh well thats why they are hireing the best thats right. This is supposed to add a great deal of entertainment value for all as the characters that populate the npc universe seem far more real.
This is supposed to become common knowledge soon. This will not be a closed project. In other words players are going to actively be sought out and asked questions based on docs similar to these before actual codeing even commences. It seems that both SOE and LA have decided to take a glass is empty so lets fix everything wrong and do it right. They have also decided to do something unprecedented with a MMORPG and set a goal that actually exceeds any game on the market. A user base in excess of 10 million. In other words they want a phenomena that not only transcends the PC market but will also play to console market aswell. Expect full voice functionality your in a group expect to talk to people in your group.
In simpler speak they not only want the game to be dynamic engageing and have near infinite replay but they want it to be a damn near phenomena. If half of what I have been is true folks hold on to your hats this will be groundbreaking and maybe even usher in a whole new view of entertainment. This game will be built to cover all bases. If will have room for both camps casual and advanced players. Both Solo and group built.
The only question is even with the plan to recycle so much can this game possibly arrive this year. This depends whole heartedly on just how much resources and how fast they accumulate. Though what is apparant is that GL and LA are looking at this product as the actual backbone and fire starter for the entire franchise leading into the television series to come.
Still no info on whether we will get original SWG back in the hiatus. Like I said the developement team for this product is actively planning to approach a new way of getting player feedback, and that way will be to actually seek out very inovative players and community members past and present not just to probe whether they like or dislike a concept but to also get specific insight into what mmorpg players want at the core. Note you will not need to be a current galaxies subscriber to find yourself being polled, but if you do find yourself being polled be polite. Please dont say stuff like eat **edit** and die. These arent necassarily the guys who brought about the SWG fiasco, and are actually looking to make what might be among the top five games of all time. So answer the questions say thankyou and show that you are interested in helping. Trust me you might find yourself going through the roof on this stuff with glee.
This project started just before torres was scheduled to on G4TV like the very day. This is why he did not show up on the show. Not because he was afraid, but that they werent going to waste the shows time for a product that would be in a dumpster in maybe 1 month or 2. For once SOE and LA did the right thing and not bait and switch. Far better to wait a month maybe even two to show up on that program to show the developement of the new SWG.
While posting this information isnt in violation of any NDA. I would still like to follow a bit of journalistic integrity. Unless my sources wish to be identified I cannot really hand out the information. What I can say is its not some third hand sort of thing. In other words I have seen the docs, and they are sizeable documents at that. This isnt like a memo just made. The documents go so far as to formulate which technology will be preferable as the servers and what developement software they are looking to use. What blew me away was the planing and scheduleing that they planned to use for motion capture.
