Thinking about getting myself a new computer moniter for christmas. What's a good size? Is 24" the biggest I should go? Anyone have a larger than 24" monitor? Pros/Cons. Looking to stay under $1,000 (or two under $500 each). Thanks in advance.

I recently bought:
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/products/Monitors/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=29&sku=S2409W3
Works great for me, looks good, no dead cells and comes with a 3 year warranty, only $350.

And a 22" version. and cant wait to get a 2nd 24"
its really big, has HDMI input along with many other things including an upcomming video only connector that will replace DVI like DVI did fo VGA

When I got mine, 30 was the biggest you could go before it turned into "TV" resolution. I got the Dell flatcreen whatever 30inch and have never regretted it. it should be a LOT less now days, I think it was over a year ago I picked it up.

The only problem going into big screens like 30" is the possbility of having to keep your video card updated more often. You are going into a much higher resolution, now alot depends on the games you play but if spending money isnt an issue then the bigger screens are great. I still use a 24" and I doubt I would go bigger. Personally I dont like TN panels which is what you get in the cheaper monitors. I avoid them like the plague cause I cant stand the lower viewing angles as one of the drawbacks.

Anything over 24" is too big. Unless you spend an amazing amount of cash, monitors above 24" are usually bad for gaming (shadows, refresh rates, etc), and not to mention you'll either have to set it so far back that you'll have to put it on another desk, or sit up too close and move your head constantly. 22-24" is where it's at. For MMOs i'd go 24, for FPS i'd go 22.

24" I would say is the max on the size you should go for a monitor. The larger the screen, the more expensive it is to get a higher resolution (low resolution are actually more common).
The thing to keep in mind, is most people sit within 2.5 feet of their monitor. The bigger the screen, the more you will have to move your head, and shift your eyes to see the screen. The best monitor is going to allow you to see the screen, without doing that.
The larger the screen, the more prudent it becomes to sit farther away, and in high resolutions, the harder it gets to see from a farther distance. So, once you go outside of 24", you are rapidly approaching the laws of diminishing returns.

yep...too big is no good ... once i tried playing FFXI on my projector...in about 15 min i had a cramp in my neck and a had to take a nap from exhaustion. moving your eyes and head is no good for any extended gameplay.
